Toddler tantrums: what helps in the moment
Why tantrums happen and simple ways to get through them.
Why they happen
Tantrums are a normal part of development from around 1 to 4 years. Toddlers have big feelings and not yet the words or self-control to manage them.
In the moment
Stay calm and close, keep your child safe and use few words. Name the feeling: “You are cross because we have to leave.” Wait for the storm to pass before talking.
Afterwards
Offer a cuddle and move on. Keep routines predictable, give warnings before changes, and offer small choices so your child feels some control.
When to ask for help
Talk to your GP or child health nurse if tantrums are very frequent, very long, involve hurting themselves or others, or you are finding it hard to cope.
