Toilet training: readiness signs and a simple plan
When to start and how to keep it low pressure.
Signs of readiness
Most children are ready between 2 and 3 years. Signs include staying dry for a couple of hours, telling you when they have done a wee or poo, and wanting to copy others.
Getting started
Choose a quiet time without big changes. Let your child sit on the potty or toilet at regular times, such as after meals, and keep it relaxed.
Accidents happen
Accidents are part of learning. Clean up calmly without fuss. Praise effort rather than results.
Night time
Staying dry at night often comes later, sometimes years later. Keep using night nappies or pull-ups until your child wakes dry most mornings.
