Water safety and swimming lessons by age

Constant supervision, safe pools and how lessons fit in.

Keep watch

Young children can drown quickly and silently, often in shallow water. Always keep an adult within arm’s reach of children under 5 in or near water, including baths.

Fence and empty

Pools and spas must have compliant fencing with self-closing gates. Empty buckets, paddling pools and baths straight after use.

Lessons by age

Water familiarisation classes can start in the first year. Formal lessons build skills from around 4 years. Lessons help, but they do not replace supervision.

Learn CPR

A CPR course gives you skills you hope never to need. Many councils and first aid providers run short courses for parents.
