Starting child care in Australia

From choosing a service to settling in, make the next decision a little clearer.

Find a service that fits

Consider location, opening hours, the days you need and how the service communicates with families. StartingBlocks lets you explore services and published quality information. Visit your shortlist and write down the questions that matter to your household; a rating is one part of the decision, not a substitute for a conversation.

Keep applications organised

Record when you joined each waitlist, the days requested and any deposit or administration fee. Ask how offers are made and when you should check back. A waitlist entry is not a confirmed place. If your plans change, update the services you contacted.

Check the subsidy rules at the source

The 3 Day Guarantee began on 5 January 2026. CCS-eligible families can access at least 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight. This does not mean universally free care or guarantee an available place. Check current eligibility, approved hours and claim steps with Services Australia before budgeting.

Plan the transition

Ask your service about orientation, what to bring, comfort items and how updates are shared. Prepare a short list of questions about your child’s routines and support needs. Leave room to adjust your plan as your family learns what works.
