Your family’s first screen agreement

Start with a conversation before the device arrives.

Your family’s first screen agreement

Talk about what the device is for

List the activities your family wants to support, such as staying in touch or using a school resource. This gives you a starting point for discussing when and where the device will be used.

Choose a few understandable rules

Agree on device-free moments, where devices are stored and what to do if something uncomfortable appears. Keep the agreement short enough that everyone can remember it.

Include the adults

Explain how adults will model the same habits where possible. If work or other responsibilities create exceptions, make those clear. Consistency is easier when the reasons behind a rule are visible.

Leave room to ask for help

Make it clear that a child can talk with you about an online experience. Revisit the agreement as their needs change. For safety concerns, seek current guidance from relevant official online-safety services.

Try this, at your own pace.

  • Name the device’s main purpose.
  • Choose two device-free moments.
  • Agree how to ask for help.
