Free kinder and preschool: what each state offers
Early learning in the year or two before school, and how to find a place.
Why it matters
A quality preschool or kindergarten program in the year before school helps children build social, language and early learning skills.
What is offered
Every state and territory funds a preschool program in the year before school, and several now offer free or low-cost places for 3-year-olds too. Names differ: kindergarten, kindy, preschool or pre-prep.
Where it runs
Programs run in long day care centres, standalone kindergartens and some schools. Check your state page and your state education department for current fees and hours.
Enrolling
Enrolments often open more than a year ahead. Ask local services about their process and join waitlists early.
