Is my child ready for school? Starting age by state
Starting ages across Australia, and what readiness looks like.
Starting age
Each state sets a date your child must turn 5 by to start that year. It ranges from 1 January in Tasmania to 31 July in New South Wales. See your state page for the details.
Readiness is more than age
Teachers look for children who can separate from parents, follow simple instructions, manage toileting and lunchboxes, and play with others. Academic skills such as reading are taught at school.
Starting a year later
In most states, children born close to the cut-off can start a year later. Talk to your preschool teacher and the school; they see many children and can help you decide.
The year before
Enrolments usually open early in the year before. Visit schools, check your catchment area and ask about transition programs.
